Marshmellow Shape Building

We have been continuing to work through our math unit of identifying 2D & 3D shapes and their attributes. This week, students were able to apply their learning to build and create shapes using toothpicks and marshmellows. The students created (1) 2 different 2D shapes (2) a pyramid and (3) a cube. Check out the pictures below of their creations:

Open & Closed Shapes

In our Math unit, we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes. This week, students learnwd about "open shapes" and "closed shapes" Students learned that "closed shapes" are real shapes because the lines/sides connect all the way around. Students learned that "open shapes" are not real shapes because the lines/sides do not connect all the way. Students were then able to demonstrate their learning using Wikki Stix to build & model different 2D shapes and open/closed shapes. Check out the pictures of their work below:

First Week of School!

We had a great first week of school in 1st grade! In Crew, we enjoyed getting to know our new classmates by playing name games and playing together with new friends. In Reading, we learned and showed what a 1st grade reader looks and sounds like. We practiced the different ways that first grade readers can read (looking at pictures, finding words you know, sounding out tricky words, etc.). In Writing, we learned and showed what a first grade writer looks and sounds like. We wrote about our families, the things we like and what we like to do at recess. In Math, we explored 2D shapes and their attributes (names, sides, vertices). Most of all- we had lots of fun together! Check out the pictures below from our first week of school:
